SABAH TRADE SUMMARY
JANUARY JULY 2001
Sabah continued to register a favourable balance of trade during January July 2001 with a surplus amounting to RM1,035.5 million as against RM1,192.2 million for the same period last year, a decrease of RM156.7 million or 13.1 %. This was attributed to the higher imports (+ RM113.3 million) while the exports registered a decrease of RM43.4 million between the review periods. Higher exports receipts were collected from crude petroleum, palm oil and methanol while significant drop in the exports of sawn timber, veneer sheets & hot briquetted iron were noted.
Exports
Sabah recorded export receipts amounting to RM7,441.5 million during January- July, this year as against RM7,484.9 million for the same period last year, a decline of RM43.4 million or 0.6 %. Sabahs major export commodities during the current review period were crude petroleum, palm oil, plywood, sawn timber, palm kernel oil, methanol and uncoated printing and writing paper which together accounted for RM5,567.6 million or 74.8% of total exports.
Crude petroleum retained its position as the leading revenue earner during the current review period, with a higher revenue amounting to RM2,045.9 million as against RM1,874.2 million during the review periods. This increase was jointly resulted from the better f.o.b export price from RM758.8 per tonne to RM773.8 per tonne (+ RM15.0 per tonne) while the volume exported rose by 174 thousand tonnes during the current review period. The Republic of Korea, India, and Peninsular Malaysia together imported about 71.3% of Sabahs crude petroleum during the current review period.
Revenue from palm oil, Sabahs second major export commodity amounted to RM1,869.2 million and contributed to a quarter or 25.1 % of total export earnings during the first seven months of 2001 as against RM1,804.3 million of the previous period (+RM64.9 million). The increased receipt was solely attributed to the higher volume exported by 816.3 thousand tonnes whilst the f.o.b export price plummeted by 32.4% from RM1,177.9 per tonne to RM796.0 per tonne during the review periods. India (514.2 thousand tonnes), the Republic of China (427.1 thousand tonnes), Pakistan (392.1 thousand tonnes) and the Netherlands (390.8 thousand tonnes) were the main buyers during the current review period.
Plywood registered export receipts amounting to RM664.6 million as against RM663.0 million during the periods under review. The export volume rose by 82.6 thousand cubic metres to 619.6 thousand cubic metres while its f.o.b export price was lowered by RM162.1 per cubic metre to RM1,072.6 per cubic metre. The main importers for Sabahs plywood during the current review period were Japan (204.5 thousand cubic metres), the Republic of Korea (103.7 thousand cubic metres), the U.S.A (95.2 thousand cubic metres), and Peninsular Malaysia (74.2 thousand cubic metres).
Imports
Sabahs imports for January-July 2001 amounted to RM6,406.0 million as against RM6,292.7 million recorded for the same period in 2000.
